  • Vegetarian Vietnamese Cuisine Now Open at Bellevue’s Soma Towers: Chay Concept, a vegetarian restaurant, has opened at Soma Towers in downtown Bellevue, offering a plant-based Vietnamese menu with imitation meats.   • Baba’s Kabab Shop to Open in Downtown Bellevue: Baba’s Kabab Shop is coming to 505 106th Avenue Northeast in Bellevue Park Plaza, specializing in modern Pakistani kebabs and skewers.   • Issaquah Police Weekly Crime Blotter (January 28, 2025): This week's blotter includes reports on shoplifting, identity theft, vehicle prowls, accidents, and vandalism. Notably, two suspects were arrested for theft after attempting to shoplift, and a stolen vehicle was recovered. Additionally, a resident reported identity theft involving suspicious charges, and a vehicle was broken into at a local trail parking lot.   • Kirkland City Council Meeting – February 4, 2025: The Kirkland City Council will meet on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, starting at 7:30 p.m. in a hybrid format, allowing both in-person and Zoom attendance. The Business Agenda will include discussions on the 84th Ave NE Bike/Walk/Roll Improvements, the Seattle Kraken Iceplex Proposal, and the 2025 Legislative Agenda.   • Traffic Updates: Several construction projects are ongoing in Kirkland, affecting traffic at various locations. On 100th Avenue Northeast, traffic may be briefly alternated or stopped between Northeast 137th and 145th streets, with a 25 mph speed limit. On 116th Avenue Northeast near Lake Washington High School, there will be a single lane reduction from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for sidewalk and stormwater improvements. A new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon is being installed on Northeast 80th Street at 124th Avenue Northeast, requiring traffic control from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additionally, drivers on 132nd Avenue Northeast and Juanita Drive will encounter single-lane traffic and flagger control due to sidewalk construction and improvements.   • Redmond Unveils Washington State’s First Electric Fire Truck: The City of Redmond and the Redmond Fire Department will celebrate the launch of Washington’s first electric fire truck with a ribbon-cutting event at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Redmond City Hall. The truck, funded through grants and donations, costs the city just $264,600 instead of the original $2.4 million price tag. The electric engine supports Redmond’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2030, reducing pollution while maintaining top-tier performance. The truck can operate fully electric for 80 miles, pumps 2,000 gallons per minute, and recharges in under 15 minutes. (info)

  • Redmond Earns Silver-Level Bicycle Friendly Community Award: The City of Redmond has been recognized as a Silver-Level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) by the League of American Bicyclists for its efforts in creating safer and more accessible biking infrastructure. This award highlights Redmond’s progress in promoting cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transportation.   • Renton Man Killed While Confronting Car Thief: A 35-year-old Renton man was shot and killed early Saturday morning after attempting to stop a suspect from stealing his car near South 27th Place and Benson. The victim grabbed the driver’s side window as the suspect drove off, dragging and fatally shooting him. Police later found the stolen 2019 Kia Sorento but have not yet apprehended the suspect. Authorities report at least five car prowls in the area that night and believe multiple suspects are involved. Residents along Benson Road are urged to check security footage from 3:15 to 7:30 a.m. and report any leads to Sergeant Judd at [email protected]. (info)

  • Renton Man Credits Dog for Saving His Life After Hit-and-Run: A Renton man is recovering at Harborview Medical Center after a hit-and-run driver struck him while he was walking his dog, Esco, near Talbot Road South and 51st Court on Jan. 24. Despite being injured, Esco ran home alone—nearly a mile—to alert the family, leading to a timely rescue. Richard Sanchez, the victim, suffered severe leg injuries, while Esco is also recovering with pain medication. The Sanchez family, who recently lost their son, is grateful for Esco’s heroism. Renton Police are seeking any dashcam footage or witness reports, particularly of a car with a small sunroof and potential front-end damage. If you have information, please contact Renton Police.   • Ziply Fiber Permit Suspension Update in Sammamish: Following the suspension of Ziply Fiber’s Right-of-Way (ROW) permits on Jan. 23, 2025, due to issues with underground high-speed fiber installation, the City of Sammamish has been actively working with Ziply representatives to address concerns. Based on Ziply’s corrective actions, the City expects to lift the suspension for permit ROW2024-03745 in the coming weeks, allowing work primarily along 228th Ave NE from NE 8th St to NE 28th Pl. Restoration efforts, including yard and roadway repairs, will continue on a limited basis. Residents with concerns can submit requests via the MySammamish website or app under “Ziply Impacts & Concerns.” (info)

  • Windstorm Recovery Update: Parks Reopened, FEMA Reimbursement Requested – The November 2024 bomb cyclone left lasting damage in the City, with cleanup continuing into 2025. City crews worked long shifts clearing debris, coordinating with King County, Eastside Fire & Rescue, and Puget Sound Energy for power restoration. A debris drop-off event was held in December, and City Hall operated as a warming center for a week. Social media updates surged by 393%, reaching over 264,000 views. All parks except Beaver Lake Preserve have reopened, with its trails expected to reopen by March-April following arborist removal of hazardous trees and boardwalk repairs.   • Eastlake Boys Basketball Snaps Losing Streak with 67-47 Victory Over Hazen – The Eastlake Wolves ended their home losing streak with a decisive 67-47 win over the Hazen Highlanders on Saturday.   • Volunteer for Tree Planting to Restore Salmon Habitat in Woodinville – Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group is hosting two Tree Planting Restoration Events to help restore Chinook salmon habitat along the West Sammamish River Trail in Woodinville. Volunteers can participate on February 8 (10 AM - 2 PM) or February 22 (10 AM - 1 PM). Activities include removing invasive species and planting native shrubs and trees.
