Happy Monday everyone! Hope everyone had a great weekend and is ready for the spring weather. We have a lot of news and events this week so get ready! A big piece of news affecting everyone in the state of Washington is banning the use of foam containers for any take-out or fast food. This law will go into effect on June 1st and will make it illegal for these containers to be used.

Also, we wanted to add that our only goal is to improve the quality of the newsletter and we’re working on many ways to do so.   • Sound Transit and Bellevue are collaborating on a new art exhibit for the 2 line opening. The photographs are meant to show the building of the agency’s Link lines 1 and 2. (info)

  • Progress toward 30% design of signature crossing over 1-405 to be shared at the Bellevue Botanical Garden. The Grand Connection Crossing will provide a safe way to walk from downtown Bellevue across 1-405 to Wilburton and the Eastrail. (info)

News:

  • Get involved in the City of Redmond's Community Road Safety Assessment on May 11th to share ideas and concerns with transportation safety engineers and planners, contributing to the development of a Safety Action Plan. The Safety Action Plan aims to address transportation safety issues, particularly for vulnerable users like pedestrians and bicyclists, through community input and collaboration. (info)

  • Beginning May 3, 2024, parking changes at the Redmond Municipal Campus will accommodate the opening of the Redmond Senior & Community Center, with designated areas for visitors, city vehicles, and staff, while maintaining free parking with forthcoming time restrictions. (info)

Issaquah:

News:

  • Issaquah High School recently faced the problem of deep fakes and AI surrounding explicit photos of students. Washington state is now implementing a new law, effective June 6, to protect minors and adults from the distribution of fabricated and sexually explicit images. The law expands criminal offenses and penalties for distributing such images, aiming to address the growing issue of online exploitation and harassment. (info)

  • Upcoming Issaquah Highlands Community Association Board Elections for Districts 2,4, and 6. Statement of interest forms for the IHCA Board of Directors candidacy will be available online on May 1, 2024. The final ballot will be available online on June 3rd. (info)

  • The Kirkland City Council authorized the addition of a full-time Firefighter/EMT to the Mobile Integrated Health Unit of the Kirkland Fire Department. (info)

  • Heads up Juanita Drive users, contractors are beginning work this spring on two projects to help reduce flooding on Juanita Drive. These projects will start in spring and end in August! (info)

News:

  • The City of Sammamish is launching a Video Time Capsule project to commensurate Sammamish’s 25th anniversary. Residents can submit videos to celebrate their memories in Sammamish. The video will be showcased on August 16th, 2024. (info)

  • The City is amending its Town Center Plan and Development Code in alignment with the ongoing Comprehensive Plan Periodic update process. This initiative aims to increase the availability of affordable housing in the Town Center subarea. (info)

  • The Mercer Island City Council is considering changes to its planning commission to improve efficiency and expertise, reducing the commission's size and including both residents and paid practitioners. Some council members support the proposal, citing the need for better decision-making and addressing residents' concerns, while others express concerns about outside influence and insufficient citizen input. News:

  • Following an investigation into recent emailed threats to Canyon Park Middle School and Westhill Elementary School, the Bothell Police Department located a minor, who confessed in the presence of their parents and accepted responsibility for the threats. (info)

  • A task force of Kenmore residents has been meeting for two months, and by the end of April, they will be bringing forward a set of recommendations aimed at keeping the City’s financial lines from crossing. With the cost of doing city business rising faster than revenues (including property tax, our largest source of revenue, being limited to 1% growth per year by state law), the task force has their work cut out for them.   • SR 522, lane reductions and Southeast 8th Street on and off-ramp closures on southbound I-405 begin on April 19th and goes until April 22nd. All lanes eastbound and one lane of westbound SR 522 at the I-405 interchange will be closed. (info)

  • The City of Woodinville has hired AECOM to assess local pavement conditions using specialized camera technology mounted on their vehicle from April 17-21, 2024. This data will be used to prioritize road repairs and develop long-term maintenance plans, ensuring informed decisions about roadway upkeep without disrupting traffic flow. (info)
