Happy Monday, everyone and happy memorial day! Welcome to this week's edition of Seastside. We have plenty of exciting updates and events to share with you along with some exciting news around Seastside. This week's question is: what local hidden gems or favorite spots would you recommend to your fellow readers? Feel free to reply to this email with your suggestions.

News:

  • The city announced that Emil King will be the new direct of the City’s Development Department, effective June 1st. (info)

  • Bellevue is developing its first watershed Management Plan to improve the health of community streams, lakes and wetlands over the next 20 years. There are over 80 miles of streams in Bellevue alone. (info)

  • The North Bellevue Community Center has been awarded a $220,000 King County grant to expand its continuing mission as a hub of activity for older adults. (info)

  • The City Council reviewed proposed land use code amendments to enhance tree preservation, aiming to achieve a 40% tree canopy goal through a new "tree credits" system for development proposals. (info)

  • The Safe Parking Pilot Program in the Wilburton neighborhood now accommodates six families living in vehicles, providing secure parking, daytime facilities, and supportive services, while the Eastgate housing campus offers over 300 units of affordable housing and comprehensive support services.   • An apartment building in Bellevue was evacuated due to a reported fentanyl smell however no hazardous material was found. (info)

  • There is a new affordable homeownership opportunity. Two 2 bed/2 bath units are available for $153,934. You must meet certain income requirements. (info)

  • The city is looking for feedback on the development of new mixed use zones. These new zones will go into effect in 2025, replacing commercial, retail and design districts. (info)

  • A 14-year old was arrested following a high speed chase in Redmond. (info)

  • Two men were arrested after selling fake Pokémon cards. One of which was a Redmond resident. (info)

  • Troopers are investigating after a person was injured on Wednesday in a head on crash on State Route 900. (info)

News:

  • A 3-vehicle collision in Sammamish sends 3 to the hospital. One sustained life-threatening injuries and two others had non-life-threatening injuries. (info)

  • Sammamish has proceeded with the Town Center project. It is set to bring hundreds of new apartments and townhomes to the city. The project has been in works since 2008. (info)

  • There will be asphalt paving work from May 28 - May 31 on these areas:

    • Northeast 4th Street and 219th Avenue Northeast (paving 219th only)

    • 217th Avenue Northeast, 218th Avenue Southeast, Northeast 1st Street (paving Northeast 1st Street only)

    • 218th Avenue Southeast at Main Street (paving Main Street and 218th Avenue Southeast)

News:

  • The City of Renton's Public Works Department is celebrated in May for its dedicated efforts in maintaining and enhancing the city's infrastructure, including road repairs and maintenance of various facilities. (info)

  • Mercer Island High School's Music in the Community Club, founded by juniors Ashwin Krishnaswamy and Jascha Silberstein, performed jazz and classical music recently at local retirement communities and hospitals, combining volunteering with their passion for music. (info)

  • The Mercer Island High School girls lacrosse team won the 3A state championship by defeating Seattle Prep 12-11 on May 17 at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila. The MIHS boys tennis team also placed 2nd at the 3A State Championship. (info)

News:

  • The Teamsters union has called for the resignation of Carnation City Manager Ana Cortez after an arbitrator ordered the city to reinstate and provide back pay to four wrongfully terminated employees, costing an estimated $500,000. The terminations occurred shortly after wage increases were approved, and the union alleges the city violated its collective bargaining agreement. (info)

  • Remlinger Farms' summer concert series begins on May 24 despite ongoing code enforcement issues, with King County and Remlinger working to finalize an event permit.   • James McNeal, who served on the Bothell City Council, has been charged with the murder of 20-year-old Liliya Guyvoronsky. Prosecutors allege McNeal had a "tantrum" after a breakup and was providing financial support to the victim. He was formally charged last week​. (info)

  • A woman is wanted for using a fake passport to steal $8,000 from another woman's bank account in Woodinville, believed to have obtained the victim's information from a stolen bill. The suspect, who may be part of a larger operation and has been seen in multiple counties. (info)

  • Tipsy Cow Burger Bar - Tipsy Cow Burger Bar delivers some of the best gourmet burgers in the area, with a wide variety of creative toppings and house-made sauces. They also have such a wide range of draft beers to try.
